Mental health

What is mental health?

Mental Health refers to a way of describing your overall wellbeing, including physical, social and emotional. Wellbeing can be described as feeling good, happy and positive about yourself and the way your life is heading.

How to look after yourself

What can you do to maintain good mental health

  • Look after yourself: healthy diet, regular exercise and getting enough sleep
  • Manage stress  by making time for some positive activities or ‘Personal Time’ for yourself that will help you to relax and have fun
  • Practice self -care such as listening to music, reading, chatting with a friend, going for a walk, watching a movie or meditation
  • Establish a balance between study, work and life in general
  • Establish your priorities by figuring out what matters to you most and what you value
  • Try to do just one thing at a time
  • Build your confidence and set SMART goals
  • Identify your strengths and weaknesses together, accept them, build on them and try your best
  • Make time for family and friends
  • Learn ways to cope with negative thoughts by accepting and acknowledging them
  • Keep a journal to express your thoughts and feelings
  • Start and enjoy your hobbies
  • Share humour when you hear or see something that makes you smile or laugh, share it with someone you know
  • Volunteering is called the ‘win-win’ activity because helping others makes you feel good about yourself. At the same time, it widens your social network and provides you with new learning experiences and potential job leads
  • Ask for help from family, friends, and professionals
